Our Tutors

Our only asset is our tutors. We owe our success to their devotion and professionalism. Our reputation rests entirely on their shoulders. The Cornerstone board carefully screens all applicants. All tutors must have classroom experience and be qualified to teach in their discipline.

Mrs. Angie Clement

Mrs. Angie Clement is the Cornerstone Latin tutor.  She has a B.A. in English and an M.A.T. in Latin from the University of Virginia.  She has been teaching at Cornerstone since 1996.  The mother of six children, she is currently home-schooling her three youngest.

Mrs. Cindy Herndon

Mrs. Cindy Herndon graduated from Frostburg State in 1976 with a degree in English and Education. She then began a career teaching in junior high. After 5 years, she moved to a parochial high school. After 14 years in the traditional classroom, she became a stay at home mom, to be followed by a home school mom which she has done for the past 17 years. She joined Cornerstone in 1999 where she teaches composition/elements of literature, American literature, and the American Novel and Drama.

Col. William Holmes

Colonel Holmes, US Army (Retired), 32 years active duty holds a B.A. in European History, an M.A. in Diplomatic History, and an M.S. in International Relations.  In addition to 13 years in commercial real estate development, Col. Holmes also taught special education, 6th grade math and science for two years at Crofton Middle School. He has been a tutor in US History, World History, and American Government/Basic Economics at Cornerstone since 2001.

Mrs. Marla Johnson

Mrs. Marla Johnson has a B. S. degree in nursing and has 15 years experience as nurse in several different fields including Medical/Surgical, OB/GYN, pediatrics, and patient education. She took a 10 year break from her nursing career to home school her children. She has 7 years of experience teaching in a tutorial setting. She loves learning and teaching about the wonders of God’s creation. She enjoys cooking, gardening, sewing, and reading historical fiction. She is married and has two daughters. She and her family enjoy traveling, hiking in the mountains, sailing, and pursuing other outdoor activities together. She and her family attend St. Andrew’s Anglican Fellowship in Severn, MD. 

Mrs. Sharon Jollie

Mrs. Jollie has a BS degree in education with majors in Math and Music from Concordia University in Seward, NE. She also earned a M.A. degree in Family and Adult Education from the University of Minnesota. Mrs. Jollie has experience teaching high school math, as well as various music classes and instruments to students of all ages. She has homeschooled her three children through some of their educational years. Her husband works for NIH. She is a proponent of life long learning and enjoys spending time with her family, playing games, playing music in various groups, and spending time in the great outdoors.

Mrs. Marsha MacLeod

Mrs. MacLeod received a B.A. in English from Arizona State University and an M.A. in English from California State University Long Beach.  She has taught students in traditional classrooms and has tutored in the home-schooling community, including four years as a tutor at Cornerstone.  She loves to encourage students to study literature and to create stories, poems, songs, dramas, and speeches.  She offers additional thoughts on the creative arts at www.respondingtopsalms.com .

Mrs. Paule-Esther Peaker

Mrs. Paule-Esther Peaker is the Cornerstone French Tutor. A native of Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), she is proficient in French (her first language). Mrs. Peaker has studied in the French educational system up to the bachelor’s level while residing in Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, and France. In the past, she has tutored a Washington Post reporter in preparation for his assignment in a French-speaking country. She holds a M.S. in chemistry from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. While working on her masters, she taught a laboratory-based chemistry course for freshmen as well as a laboratory-based biochemistry course for seniors. Mrs. Peaker is passionate for the Lord and strives to present a student-engaging approach to teaching that will honor Him. She is married and is the mother of a wonderful bilingual child.

Mrs Roxanne Reid

Mrs. Roxanne Reid is the Chemistry tutor. She graduated from Clearwater Christian College with a BS in Biology and a minor in Bible, Education, and Psychology. She has taught middle and high school sciences at CBCA for eight years and coached junior and varsity volleyball for seven years. She has taken a year off to care for her son. Currently, she is teaching high school science part time. She plans on homeschooling her child(ren) in the future. She is an active member at Calvary Baptist Church playing her sax and caring for children in the nursery.

Mrs. Chris Schaeffer

Mrs. Schaeffer’s college studies (ASN, RN, BS) led her into nursing, with her emphasis on epidemiology and disease control. She and her husband Steve (& one son) served as missionaries in Papua New Guinea from 1989-1993. After returning to the USA Mrs. Schaeffer specialized in hospice nursing and home educating her three sons. Due to a long history of globe trotting with her diplomat parents and her own travels as a missionary in Oceania, her natural interest in geography led to an intense study of grade school and then high school geography. She has used many of the materials that have come along in recent years to help her develop her unique way of teaching World Regional Geography. Mrs. Schaeffer has been tutoring at Cornerstone since the fall of 2006.

Mrs Megan Swartz

Mrs. Megan Swartz studied English Language and Literature at Grove City
College and the University of Maryland (UM), where she received a
Master's in Composition and Rhetoric. While studying at UM, she taught
Introduction to Academic Writing, a rhetoric-based writing course for
freshmen. She has been tutoring at Cornerstone since 2005. She and her
husband are members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Bowie. She has
two young children.

Mr Paul Verrillo

Mr. Paul Verrillo graduated from Gettysburg College in 1968 with a degree in Latin and Education. He then began a career teaching Latin and English at Annapolis High School after graduation. After 17 years there, he moved across town to Annapolis Area Christian teaching Latin and Pre-Calc and Calculus. From 1991 to 96 he taught Algebra, Geometry and Advanced Math. He returned to teach Algebra 1 & 2 and Advanced Math at AACS until he retired from the classroom in 2002. Since then he has done private tutoring mainly in all levels of math including college Calculus. He and his wife attend EP Church of Annapolis. Mr. Verrillo is also active BSF.
