8th Grade Junior World Regional Geography
Class Length:
One Semester (Fall 2010)
Description:
This 15 week long course will take place in the fall semester and will introduce the students to World Regional Geography. The course will concentrate on learning the concepts of geography through the use of the Five Themes of Geography, the Six Aspects of Culture, a weekly analysis of current World Events and the Geography Coloring Book. There will be approximately 6 quizzes and a final exam. The course finale will be the class's participation in the National Geographic Bee school level competition. The goal of the course is to provide the students with tools with which to analyze the events occurring in the world around them.
Workload:
The students will be expected to do research and write out answers to questions each week. Ideally, each student will have internet access so as to be able to access research information, read online assignments and utilize some collaborative online teaching tools. The students will be bringing in a Current Event each week from the area of the world that is currently being covered. The research required to answer the weekly assignments will be available on the internet at various news sources as well as through the public library portals. The students will each have their own new copy of Wyn Kapit's The Geography Coloring Book in which they will work each week. This is an essential part of the course and the workbook will be checked intermittently.
