Elements of Literature and Composition

The focus and purpose of this class is to develop a mature writing style. This involves learning to write varied and complex sentences and arranging them in an organized way dependent on the purpose and subject. Students will explore creative writing as well as expository writing.

Because writing should never be taught in a vacuum, students will relate their writing to literature and learn to analyze literature. We will use a genre approach textbook. Those genre include, short stories, prose, drama—both modern and Shakespearean, and poetry. Students will also read one novel to supplement the program.

Because many homeschoolers have never had public speaking opportunities, I have included a brief 3-4 speech unit that will help students learn some basics.

Grades are based on the weekly writing assignments, literature tests and quizzes, and oral presentations.
