Christian Writers and the Research Paper
Class Length: One Semester
Description:
As a class we will study and discuss the following examples of allegory, poetry, fiction, autobiography, and nonfiction:
John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress
Amy Carmichael’s Toward Jerusalem
C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters
Corrie ten Boom’s The Hiding Place
Max Lucado’s When God Whispers Your Name
Each student will select and read a book by an additional Christian writer. Step by step, the student will gather information, organize research notes, and write a footnoted paper. We will use The Wadsworth Guide to MLA Documentation (2nd edition) to study research writing. Students will have opportunities to share their discoveries throughout the semester and to present summaries of their papers at the end of the semester.
A student’s evaluation will be based on reading assignments, research, the research paper, and class participation.
Books:
The Wadsworth Guide to MLA Documentation (2nd edition) by Linda S. Schwartz. ISBN: 1111347379.
Students may use library copies of the books that we study together as a class and may use a modern version of The Pilgrim’s Progress. Amy Carmichael’s Toward Jerusalem, a small collection of her poems, is available at Christianbook.com.
