American Government

Text: American Government in Christian Perspective, A Beka Book.

Description: The course is divided into two semesters.

The first semester will cover the foundations of the American Republic, the Constitution, the legislative branch, and the executive branch.

The second semester will address the judicial branch, the Bill of Rights, and federal, state and local governmental structures. We will explore in depth the formulation of several important documents such as the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Articles of Confederation.

Integrated into these studies will be lectures and projects relating to the field of economics and foreign policy.

This course (will be presented in an Advanced Placement manner and) is designed to meet the standards of learning as prescribed by the Maryland State Board of Education. A great deal of our study will come from outside sources such as research using the internet, an analysis of original source documents and guest speakers. Several field trips will be taken to federal, state, and local government institutions. A major project will be assigned to be completed by the end of the course.

Expectations: Each student is expected to be constantly aware of current events. We will be “living” this course on a day to day basis. A keen imagination, an inquisitive mind and a dogged determination will be our standard. We want to finish this course of study with the realization that we have increased our ability to be better citizens and patriots.

Materials: Each student will be required to have a text book (American Government in Christian Perspective, www.abeka.com, 1-877-223-5226, code #38733, $17.50), a loose leaf notebook, writing tools, and have access to a computer. I will order for each student a Quiz/Test Booklet. It will cost the student $4.50 and will be collected early in the course.
