Algebra II

Course Description:Using Algebra and Trigonometry; Structure and Method Book 2 by Brown and Dolciani, this course will cover advanced algebraic concepts including the following topics: Inequalities, linear equations and functions, products and factors of polynomials, rational expressions, irrational and complex numbers, quadratic equations and functions, variation and polynomial equations, conics, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series, and introduction to statistics. Trigonometry is not included in this course. A 30 week syllabus is posted on the assignments page.

Course Information: Algebra II is an extension of algebra I concepts. What happens when whole numbers are not the only option? How do you explain a square root of a negative number? How can you solve equations that do factor nicely? Since the class only meets once each week, students will need to be able to study mathematical concepts independently. Students need to be resourceful in their learning, using parents, siblings, the internet, and books to study the concepts presented during lectures.

Texts:

(1) Algebra and Trigonometry; Structure and Method, Book 2 by Brown/Dolciani/Sorgenfrey/Kane. It is published by McDougal Littel/Houghton Mifflin.
I teach from the 2004 Impression, however a copyright of 2000, 1997, 1994, 1992, and 1990 will be similar enough to work with.
ISBN: 0-395-47056-0 (student edition 1990) other years listed above are also acceptable
ISBN-13: 987-0-395-97726-2 (teacher's edition)
ISBN-10: 0-395-97726-6 (teacher's edition)

(2) Algebra and Trigonometry, Structure and Method, Book 2 Solution Key. Published by McDougal
Littel/Houghton Mifflin
ISBN-13: 987-0-395-67765-0
ISBN-10: 0 -395-67765-3

A Solution Key is optional, but extremely helpful. If you buy a used version, make sure that the copyright dates match the text book. The years listed above seem to be interchangeable, but other published years have different problems.

(3) The Texas Instruments TI-84 calculator will be used for graphing and solving problems. If you use a different graphing calculator you must bring the instructions manual and learn the key strokes for your specific calculator.

Syllabus: Algebra 2

Tutor: Sharon Jollie

Prerequisite for Algebra II - Students should have completed an Algebra I course (preferably with a passing grade of a C or better).

A pre-test is posted on the website. This test should be used to determine if there are concepts that need to be reviewed prior to taking the class.
