Algebra I

Course Description: Using the text Elementary Algebra, by Harold R. Jacobs, this course will cover elementary algebra including the following topics: functions and graphs, equations in one and two variables, solving simultaneous equations, exponents, polynomials, factoring, algebraic fractions, operations on square roots/radicals, solving quadratic equations, and inequalities. The current syllabus is posted on the assignments page.

Course Information: Algebra 1 is appropriate for 9th graders or advanced 8th graders and older who have successfully completed pre-algebra (such as Saxon Algebra ½). A placement test to determine if the student is prepared is required. (Please email the tutor to find out where to send it.) The class runs at an accelerated pace and students should expect to spend one to one and a half hours per day working math assignments. Homework is graded at home; chapter tests are graded by the tutor. Students who fare well in this one class a week environment are those who work diligently and independently. With the limited class time, one-on-one assistance is minimal in the classroom and those who work best having things explained one-on-one will need additional help from a parent, sibling, or tutor.
